My previous experience with AI applications.

I have used ChatGPT to generate ideas, plan, and edit my school work. Although I have never used it to write a paper, I have utilized AI to assist me in my writing, ensuring a balance between authenticity and quality work.

How educational technology is used in my 3rd-year practicum placement.

At Connect Charter, a tech-based school, each student has access to an iPad, creating a 1:1 student-to-device ratio. The school also offers classes where students learn how to navigate technology and practice internet safety. Additionally, they offer electives such as robotics and coding, where students further develop their technology skills. The school is equipped with 3D printers and subscribes to a wide range of educational apps for enhanced learning experiences.

Connect Charter’s latest innovation is the development of a personal AI system aligned with their charter goals, inquiry-based learning models, and the Alberta curriculum. They have contracted a computer science professor from the University of Calgary to create this AI, which will eventually assist with report cards, marking, assignments, and more.

A question I have about the use of digital technologies in K to 9 education.

How can AI hinder teaching and learning?

The importance of the question.

While we frequently discuss the positives of innovative technology, it is equally important to analyze its potential drawbacks and limitations.

  1. It is so cool that Connect has 3D printers! I know SAIT has a program where teachers can sign up for their classes to participate in 3D printing and virtual reality, but it is limited to older grades. I also love that Connect teaches online safety as part of their technology lessons. Online safety is always a topic of concern, but it is an ever-growing problem as children utilize technology at younger and younger ages.

Good question! I have also wondered when I see ads on Instagram and YouTube where an AI app builds slides and lessons for the teacher when they run out of time or forget to plan. I always wonder how those lessons go, especially if the teacher does not have time to review the AI work.
